The Tangwai were not beaten down; they told those in power, in a resolute voice: \u201cWe are willing to go to prison for Taiwan\u2019s democratic future!\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b81fd28 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b81fd28\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In 1979, responding to the political situation created by the severing of diplomatic relations between the United States and the Republic of China, the KMT not only suspended elections but arrested former Kaohsiung County Magistrate Yu Teng-fa. The Tangwai launched wave after wave of rescue efforts.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>Under the White Terror, who dared even to say the words \u201chuman rights\u201d? Was that not openly defying those in power? If one person is arrested, if ten are arrested, if a hundred are arrested \u2014 what if it were ten thousand?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7230997 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7230997\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>\u201cBut what can we do? We Taiwanese, who for three hundred years have not even had the freedom to protest \u2014 what else can we do for our own fate but sigh once more? We do not want to see Yu Teng-fa grow old and die in prison, nor do we want to see Taiwan\u2019s democratic tide crushed by brutality and violence.
