A DPP Chairman’s Clear Statement on China — Not the Least Bit Ambiguous. Who Was This Chairman?

In 1994, in the days when the DPP still had leadership, its chairman said this:

“The DPP recognizes the People’s Republic of China’s authority to govern the mainland … but Taiwan does not belong to the People’s Republic of China. Taiwan is a sovereign, independent state consistent with international law.” — Shih Ming Te, Chairman of the Democratic Progressive Party, August 4, 1994, Taipei

Chinese newspaper clipping with a large bold headline and dense columns of small text

Firm in its stance toward China, yet holding an open posture:

“The DPP does not wish to make an enemy of China. … If Beijing’s hegemonic mindset seeks to extend to Taiwan, the DPP will tell them that Taiwan has enough military strength to defend itself, and that Taiwan will not submit to force.” — Shih Ming Te, Chairman of the DPP
